Rio Neon at Folknet’s Mountain Rose

There simply is no other band like Rio Neon. On stage they look like a string band, but the sound is unique. Folk-Jazz is what they call it, a singular mix of jazz standards, swing tunes and folk from the 50’s to current tunes.

The lineup includes Sally Kandel on vocals and uke; Red Michel on vocals and guitars; John Reynolds fiddle, mandolin and vocals; Roger Phillips guitar, mandolin and vocals; Bob Smith on bass; and Jim Kooser on percussion. All have been fixtures in the Kent music scene since the 70s.

The blend presents a singular approach to American roots music, from distinct takes on tunes from the Great American Songbook, to our own arrangements of tunes from Dylan, Waits, the Subdudes, and tunes from great local songwriters and our own originals. Folk-Jazz!!
